âI hope you like it.â Eileen put a large platter in the center of the table. It was a pot roast, consisting of beef with potatoes, carrots, and onions in rich gravy, sprinkled with finely chopped chives. The aroma was amazing.
She watched as Paul and Conrad put sizeable mounds of the dish on their plates and dug in vigorously.
âThis is beautiful,â Conrad said with his mouth full. âHuh, Paul?â
âIâm in love,â Paul agreed.
Eileen laughed and leaned on the table.
âI thought you canât be in love.â
âWhy?â
âThe celibacy?â
âThat has nothing to do with feeling love!â Paul protested and wiped his mouth with a napkin. âI love a lot of things and a lot of people. Celibacy is justâ ââ
âNo sex,â Conrad said bluntly, staring at the two of them. Then, he reached for more roast.
âYes,â Paul said. âWe canât have romantic partners. But you must know that, working at a church?â
âOf course. I was just poking fun at you,â Eileen laughed and started picking the dirty dishes.
âWait, please.â Paul reached into his pocket. âI want to show you something.â In his open palm he held the ring he had found in the shack. âWhat do you make of it?â
Eileen lowered herself over his hand to see better and he smelled a hint of vanilla perfume or maybe perfumed soap, and a strand of her hair tickled his forearm as she looked at the metal band.
âAn old engagement ring,â she said. âWhat about it?â
âWhat makes you say itâs an engagement ring?â Paul asked, surprised. âIt has no marks or anything.â
âI donât know.â She gave an awkward laugh. âThis is just what I first thought when I saw it. Sorry, Iâm stupid. Maybe itâs a wedding ring. But looks a bit cheap for that, no? So I thought, like, a ring that a not wealthy boy gives to a girl to ask for her hand.â
âThis conversation is getting quite unseemly,â Conrad barked. âYouâre both young, heâs a priest, and you keep talking about celibacy and romance and stuff like that.â
âIâm sorry⦠youâre right,â Eileen blushed and lowered her head.
âNo! Eileen. We werenât doing anything wrong,â Paul protested. âYouâre oversensitive, Father. It was a normal conversation.â
âIâll get on with the dishes.â Eileen took a small tower of plates and disappeared in the kitchen.
âReally.â Paul glared at Conrad. âNineteenth century.â
âIâll go to sleep now,â the older priest said and rose from the table. âYouâre free to chat about celibacy without me.â
âWe sure will, after your ridiculous intervention.â
âIf itâs true that I have killed your chatty moods, I invite you to follow in my footsteps and go to bed. Itâs going to be another long day tomorrow,â Conrad said. âAnd the beast is still on the loose. Two more victims this summer, remember? We could be next.â
